RESIDENTS OF Sarraiya in Daraganj and Dilip Nishad’s family members were not ready to accept the police version that he had died of kidney failure. They insisted that he was a victim of police brutality. “The (autopsy) report has been doctored and those who wrote it have done so under police pressure,” alleged residents when an HT team visited Dilip’s house on Thursday.

Pooh-poohing the police claim, they said Dilip was a healthy man and had not even taken a single pill for any ailment before he was picked up and beaten black and blue by the Kareilly station officer and his men. He had no history of kidney problem, they claimed. Policemen had picked him up and his family members for getting information about whereabouts of two persons who had set on fire five members of a family recently in Sadiyabad locality. Dilip was a kin of the perpetrators of the crime.

Rajkumar, the deceased’s brother said he was the first taken to the Kareilly police station on January 5. After this, policemen took him to Kanpur to locate the alleged killers, but failed. As a result he was brought back to the Kareilly police station on January 7.

Dilip was freed by the cops on January 8, but when his condition deteriorated, he was first taken to a local doctor who advised the family to take him to a nursing home where he succumbed to his injuries.

After reading the police version in newspapers on Thursday, the residents of the area have decided to teach a lesson to the police.

“We shall fight for justice,” said a resident.

It was a clear case of murder of a man by the men in uniform who were supposed to protect lives and property of citizens, said another resident.
