The article Hunger artists (January 24) was thought-provoking. What are we doing for the poor of the country? Our politicians have no time to take care of the hungry. It is a matter of grave concern that the issues that seem to capture the politicians’ imagination are the ones that only concern them directly — telephone tapping and their pay hikes.

The gap between the IT-star-eyed India and the India dying of hunger deaths is only growing. There is urgent need for accountability in the way government and private schemes to aid the poor are run.

Good beginning
King Abdullah’s interest in India and his offer to become India’s largest energy partner makes for a promising beginning. India should welcome this with equal vigour and make full use of the opportunity to develop bilateral ties that will benefit both countries.

Governor trials
The Buta Singh episode is another blot on our fractured democracy. It is a shame that he was allowed to unfurl the national flag even after the indictment by the apex court. For the Centre, it is another lesson from which it has lots to learn. For any sensible leadership was duty-bound to remove Buta Singh from his position as governor a long time ago.

Don’t spare the rod
The survey Spare that rod (January 27) shows that 70.9 per cent teachers feel that children need to be punished physically. That is quite an eye-opener in times when corporal punishment is disallowed. One way of ending the rampant practice of teachers hitting students is by taking strict action against the teacher. One way of doing this is by suspension. Show them the door and put an end to their teaching career.

Better to be right
Karnataka is in a deep political crisis. But at least the Karnataka governor has done the right thing. Sometimes it is better to lose and do the right thing than to win and do the wrong thing. Greenhorn Kumaraswamy is certainly acting in haste and will repent at leisure.
