The two fatal rail accidents in a day have once again put the spotlight on railway safety in India.

At least two people were killed and eight others sustained serious injuries when nine coaches of a Mumbai-bound Duronto Express derailed near Kalburgi in Karnataka early Saturday.

In another accident, a chartered train enroute to Shimla derailed just minutes after departing from Kalka killing two UK nationals.

The two fatal rail accidents in a day have once again put the spotlight on railway safety in India.

India has the world's fourth largest railway network that ferries more than 23 million passengers every day, but infrastructure is poorly maintained and accidents are common. Considering the never-ending chain of train accidents, can Indian Railways call itself safe?
