DISTRICT MAGISTRATE Amrit Abhijat has asked policemen to discharge election related duty with utmost caution, sincerity and without any bias.
Addressing hundreds of cops at police lines here, he lectured them on how to deal with the electorate. Unlike the Vidhan Sabha election, they (cops) would be dealing with a section of the populace which was literate and understood its rights and duties, he said. This will also lead to complaints.
Under such circumstances, he called upon them to deal with the situation with a cool mind. However, he cautioned them not to allow people moving in several vehicles in a fleet. They should be immediately stopped and taken to the police station from where they may be allowed to go later. He also asked them to be careful so that their actions do not send any wrong message to the public. Those trying to help voters reach vehicles should be stopped, but genuine voters should not be put to any kind of trouble, he said.
He laid stress on not allowing people to gather near the polling booths in lanes and by-lanes.
Meanwhile, senior superintendent of police Vijay Singh Meena made it clear that cops had the authority to shoot any person who tried to loot a ballot box.
He cautioned them not to enter the polling room unless called and remain on duty at the appointed place.Troublemakers were to be dealt with in accordance with law, he said.
He emphasised the need for a synergy between the polling parties and the cops on duty as it would greatly help in the conduct of a smooth and fair election. He said nothing went wrong in case the intentions were clear.
