As a result the State Election Commission (SEC) has issued detailed directives regarding the limit on poll expenses, candidate's qualification, age and security deposit for the post of mayor and corporators.

It may be recalled the High Court had directed the State Government on December 21, 2005 to hold the local bodies' elections within a period of six months from the date of court's order. The six month period expires on June 22, 2006. On May 26 the High Court had rejected the State Government's plea for extension of time for holding the local bodies polls.

As per State Election Commission's guidelines the candidate for the Mayoral post should have completed 30 years of age while for corporator's post, the person must have attained 21 years of age. Mayoral candidates can incur expenses upto Rs 12,50,000 while the expense limit for contestants for corporator's post is Rs one lakh.

The nomination form in white colour would be available for unreserved seat candidates while yellow colour nomination form is meant for reserved seat candidates. Notably, a person can contest the election from one seat only.

Besides it, all the qualifications as mentioned under Section 25 of Uttar Pradesh Nagar Palika Act , 1959 would be applicable for the post of corporator while those mentioned in Section 11(1) C and D of the Act would be applicable for the mayor's post.

Sources said if everything goes well then the NN elections would be held before June 22 .
