THE POLLUTION level was alarming at the Triveni Sangam and in the Ganga in Allahabad. The reason for this was unabated flow of untreated sewage water in Allahabad.

These facts were revealed in a study conducted by volunteers of the Swatch Ganga Abhiyan of Sankat Mochan Foundation.
Patron of the foundation Prof Veer Bhadra Mishra while talking to media persons on the occasion of World Environment Day and on eve of pious festival Ganga Dusshera on Monday, said devotees would take a dip in the Sangam at Allahabad during the ‘ardh-kumbh’ and Magh Mela. Both the occasions would be celebrated next year in January.
He said the study was conducted with the assistance of the National Remote Sensing Agency, an Australian-based agency.
He said 95 per cent pollution in the Sangam and in the Ganga was due to untreated sewage water of Allahabad city. He added about 40 big drains were attached with the Ganga there between a distance of 21 kms from Sangam to Bamrauli.
Mishra said three big drains as Allahapura, Salori and Chota Baghara Bara Baghada were directly flowing untreated water into the Sangam. He added fecal bacteria were counted 4.8 Lakh to 5.8 lakh per hundred millilitre in the water at Sangam and its adjoining Ganga water which was much higher than the normal count.
He said the counting of fecal bacteria was showing high pollution level at Sangam, vulnerable for water-borne diseases. He added the BOD level was recorded at 22 milligram/liter to 40. 4 milligram/litre while dilute oxygen level was recorded 5.4 to 3.8 milligram/litre.
