Pondicherry administration has sought over Rs 54 lakh from the Union Home Ministry for the modernisation of the police force of the Union Territory.
Police Inspector General P R Meena told that a five-year 'perspective plan' had been chalked out which included upgrading infrastructural facilities of 'sigma' (special information gathering machinery) wing, special branch police, police training school and forensic science laboratory among other projects.
Meena also informed that the Union Home Minstry has set apart Rs 5.44 crores for the Coastal Security project proposed by Pondicherry administrtion. The security project would involve construction of a coastal police station, introduction of two vessels and creation of posts to man the station.
The Centre has also sanctioned a standby police unit, India Reserve Batallion to assist the local police.
