People worshipped the 'sun god' and the 'mother earth' and cooked special pongal dishes, which were offered to the sun god and later distributed among friends and relatives.

Special poojas were conducted at the Sri Manakul Vinayagar Temple, thronged by thousands of people. The processional deity of 'Vinayagar' was taken around the main streets of Puducherry.

All government offices and banks remained closed.

Lt Governor Mukut Mithi, Chief Minister N Rangasamy and a host of other leaders had extended Pongal greetings to the people on Sunday.
