The Congress has demanded a CBI inquiry into the Ponzi scheme and planned a series of rallies and meetings where it would ask the government to immediately take action against companies running financial scams.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, the president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee, Pradip Bhattacharya, said, “The arrest of Sudipta Sen should not be the end of the story. A detailed investigation needs to be carried out. And only an unbiased agency like the CBI can be trusted with such an investigation. For, it would not be possible for any politician to influence it.”
CBI sources on Wednesday revealed that if the state government wants it, then CBI is willing to conduct an investigation into the scam.
Bhattacharya, however, refused to name any politician who might be involved in the Saradha scam. “I should not name any politician without proof. If the CBI investigates the matter, the proof will be in front of everyone,” he said.
Gunning for the Trinamool government, Bhattacharya said, “Sebi had issued several warnings to the state government about the Ponzi scheme companies, including Saradha Group. Even MP Somen Mitra wrote letters to the state government in this regard. Why did the government ignore these warnings? Why did it not bother to take its party MP seriously? These questions need to be looked into. If the investigation had started earlier, then this mess may not have snowballed into such a major controversy.”
Taking a dig at chief minister Mamata Banerjee for saying, “what has happened has happened,” Bhattacharya said, “How can she make such a comment, especially when the money of so many poor people is involved? Just because the Trinamool Congress has bagged 186 seats in the Assembly, does not mean it has the right to treat the investors like this. Nor should it dismiss the demands of other political parties. This dictatorship must end.”
