Just a visit to the place where letter boxes are installed will speak volumes about their condition. While lettering on some of the boxes is missing there is no timing plate on other letter boxes.

Besides, there are many letter boxes whose paint has worn out.

What's more, there are also some letter boxes from which either latch is missing or the lock system is not functioning properly, thereby jeopardising the safety of the letters.

"Move of the department in modernising its services is appreciable but at the same time the department should see to it that basic and traditional services are not affected", said AP Chaudhary who often drops letters in the letter boxes installed in the city.

"The department should utilise funds for proper maintenance of these boxes which are of great use to the common man", said Ajit, a resident of Katra.

Not only the letter boxes, the mail vans which lift mail and other postal articles from the sub-post offices to head post office are also in bade shape.

"Though the mail vans are run on contract but it is the duty of the department to check that vans are well maintained", said the sources close to department.

On being contacted the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices Parimal Sinha said that action is being taken on the matter.
