Portal containing info on elections launched

A web portal, containing information on Indian elections, was launched in Chennai on Saturday with an aim to help voters make an informed choice before exercising their franchise.

A web portal, containing information on Indian elections, was launched in Chennai on Saturday with an aim to help voters make an informed choice before exercising their franchise.The easy menu driven portal - 'www.Empoweringindia.Org' - has information ranging from candidates, constituency profiles, election results, analysis, party manifestos, constituency news updates and location of polling stations for the current Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

The portal was jointly developed by Press Institute of India (PII) and Liberty Institute in association with Friedrich Naumann, a German foundation for liberal politics.The site, inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta, provides information on candidates contesting the elections, background - their assets and liabilities, educational qualifications and criminal charges if any, besides geographical details of constituencies.

Speaking at the launch, Barun Mitra, Director, Liberty Institute, said the website encouraged voters to make an informed choice during elections."It also provides a platform for concerned citizens and organisations and political activists to work towards a common goal of enriching the democratic experience," he added.
