Postgraduate lectures at the University of Mumbai will resume from Wednesday as University of Mumbai Academic Staff Association (UMASA) – representing varsity’s post-graduate professors – called off a 43-day long strike on Tuesday.
UMASA’s decision came a day after the state government’s order enabling colleges and universities to take action against striking staff.
“Post-graduate professors and staff at the University of Mumbai have called off the strike and lectures will begin from Wednesday,” said Neeraj Hatekar, general secretary of UMASA.
UMASA and the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers' Organisation’s (MFUCTO) had called for ‘cease work’ to persuade the government to implement the Sixth Pay Commission in toto. About 30,000 members of MFUCTO are still on strike.
“Professors and staff of Mumbai Universtiy will wear black bands and badges to mark continued protest against the non-implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission,” said Hatekar.
UMASA said its 125 members resumed work in the larger interest of the student community. “Though we are not striking, we are still protesting against the non-implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission,” said UMASA member B.V. Bhosale.

{{/usCountry}}Hatekar said professors would hold classes on weekends and during Diwali and Christmas vacation to make up lecture-time lost during the strike.
