Power cuts in Gurgaon leading to rise in pollution

As power outages last more than 10 hours every day in Gurgaon, the city virtually runs on diesel-run gensets - known as captive power plants (CPP) - leading to increased pollution levels in the Millennium City. HT reports.

As power outages last more than 10 hours every day in Gurgaon, the city virtually runs on diesel-run gensets - known as captive power plants (CPP) - leading to increased pollution levels in the Millennium City.

Lakhs of litres of diesel are burnt in Gurgaon to light up the dazzling malls, run lifts in condominiums and machines in the industrial units.

Already suffering due to high cost of power produced through CPPs and the pollution emanating out of it, the residents of Gurgaon are planning to switch to an alternate use of fuel - Piped Natural Gas (PNG). Out of over 600 hi-rise residential buildings in Gurgaon, about 250 are with a power back-up facility and all commercial buildings, including malls and office complexes have their own CPPs.

However, the Haryana pollution control department claims that the Suspended Particle Matter (SPM), Respirable Suspended Particulate Matter (RSPS), Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are within control.
