HEAT IS bad. Humidity is worse. And power cuts are worst. Together they leave people angry and hot— spending sleepless nights at home and sleepy days in the office. Ever since the storm lashed the city last week, the power supply in trans-Gomti localities went haywire. This followed after a high-capacity transformer at the main transmission sub-station supplying power to various places in the trans-Gomti was burnt due to lightening, causing a Rs 5 crore loss to the UPPCL.
Though a new transformer was brought from Moradabad on Thursday, its installation, said UPPCL GM (Transmission) Ashok Kumar, would take around a week. “This was a big transformer supplying 150 MW of electricity and its replacement was as good as setting up a new sub-station,” he said. The transformer is not available in Moradabad and building a new transformer would have taken six months. So the residents under localities like Gomti Nagar, Indira Nagar, Mahanagar, Vikas Nagar, Kalyanur, Jankipuram, Triveni Nagar and Aliganj will have to face indiscriminate power cuts for a few days more till the new transformer was placed and energised. RK Gupta, a resident said, “I have never witnessed such a bad power scene. Though Lucknow is said to be a rostering-free city, the situation in my locality is worse than in the cities.”
The situation is no better in other localities either. For example, residents are of the Sector N Ashiana are fed up with prolonged power cuts they face every day. “LESA is giving a step-motherly treatment to us. While we often reel under blackouts, our neighbours in the adjoining sector do not have to undergo power cuts,” said Sudha Sharma, a resident and housewife.

{{/usCountry}}Various localities fed by the Clyde Road sub-station, like Ashok Marg, Ranapratap Marg, Gokhale Marg, MM Malviya Marg and the surrounding localities went without electricity for hours together from 10 am to 5 pm, tough was due to a scheduled shut down taken to repair the supply feeders. Power supply on the Jagat Nararayan Road and the surrounding areas was normalized late Friday evening.
