Power pangs for CWG cycling event

The Commonwealth Games cycling events have run into a power crisis of sorts. With the CWG Organising Committee asking for 1500 KW power load—more than double its earlier demand of 700 KW—the Noida Authority says they can't do anything as the already laid cables and transformers can take maximum load of 850 KW.

"The CWG OC gave the Noida Authority a written request for 700 KW load in May. Accordingly, the authority ordered for four transformers on June 1 and received the same on August 1. Assuming 65 per cent efficiency, the maximum load these transformers can provide comes to 850 KW. Th power cables, too, have a maximum power transmitting load of 850 KW. For power back-up, four power generators of 500 KVA have been arranged," the project engineer who was inspecting the installations said.

"Now, a few days ago, the OC hiked its power demand to 1500 KW. We have clarified to senior officers that enhancement of load is not possible now," he said.

The Games Committee is setting up a Games Centre—comprising a media centre, cabins for sportsmen, office complex and spectators enclosures—on the service road at the start point of the cycling track on the Expressway. The total area is around 1,100 square meters. The power requirement was for this infrastructure. The Noida Authority has also set up four high mast lights at this site.
