The seat of power continues to suffer from a shortage of power. On Monday, load-shedding in the range of 400 to 500 MW caused a blackout in large parts of the Capital.

The problem was acute in south, east and west Delhi areas which went without power for six-seven hours. Other areas experienced intermittent cuts every few minutes.

The Delhi Transco’s excuse: a 210-MW unit of the Badarpur Thermal Power Station (BTPS) tripped because of leakage in a generator. Things worsened after a unit of the Pragati power plant was shut down for a couple of hours following oil leakage in a steam turbine.

Senior BTPS officials, however, blamed the Delhi Transco and inefficient generation at Delhi's own plants. “We’ve shut one unit of our plant for planned maintenance and it’ll take a minimum of 45 days before the unit is re-commissioned,” said RN Sen, GM, BTPS. “The plant was to be shut down for maintenance in March but we’ve been postponing it following a request from Delhi Transco.”
