Talking to journalists here this afternoon Patel said some top BJP leaders had foreknowledge about the scandal. If the allegations that the Congress was behind the scandal were presumed to be true, the role of some BJP leaders in the operation could not be ruled out.

He denied the rumours about the Uma Bharti camp being the brain behind the sting operation, adding to know who was behind this scandal one should ponder who was going to benefit most from it. Predicting a split in the BJP after Uma Bharti’s Ram Roti Yatra reached Ayodhya on January 14, Patel said the party is in dilemma on ideology.

At Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s instance a line was added to the political resolution at the party’s Mumbai convention against bribery by MPs but why the former prime minister did not speak against bribery when the party boycotted on the issue from Parliament, he asked.

In Uttar Pradesh, he added, several ex-MLAs and district presidents of the Bharatiya Janata Party shared dais with Uma Bharti at Mahoba. The support to her over there could also be attributed to the party workers’ disillusionment with the party leaders.
