Investigators probing the deaths of 13 pregnant women at a government hospital in Rajasthan raided a factory here that manufactured the infected intravenous (IV) fluids suspected to have caused the deaths.
The Madhya Pradesh drug control department is trying to ascertain if Indore-based Parental Surgical India Pvt Ltd supplied contaminated IV fluids or did the fluids get contaminated during distribution or after reaching the hospital.
“We have received a report from the micro-biology department of the hospital from Jodhpur and we are investigating on those parameters. We are looking into the standard operative procedure of the factory in Indore where the fluid was manufactured to see whether there is any lacuna in the manufacturing system,” senior drug inspector Ashish Trivedi, who is part of the investigating team, said on Saturday.
Over a period of 10 days, at least 12 pregnant women died of excessive bleeding at Umaid Hospital, a government-run hospital in Jodhpur, around 575 km from here. Parallel investigations are also on in Jodhpur to determine the cause of the infection.
As a precautionary measure, drug inspectors have recalled the particular batch of IV fluids, which were administered to the deceased women from various parts of the country.
