DESPITE CLAIMS by the GSVM Medical College administration that there has been no strike at the hospitals under the medical college today, OPDs were yet to return to normal functioning on Monday. Professors attended the OPD at LLR Hospital for one hour, but by 11 am some senior doctors forcibly got the OPD closed.
However, students started providing emergency services to ensure that patients did not suffer.
But, the striking medicos and their seniors are adamant to halt the OPD services to make the strike felt despite imposition of ESMA. According to the college administration ESMA had been imposed since the last year’s protest strike by medicos over Meerut incident.
Meanwhile, from today emergency services at the hospitals were restored after the striking medicos held a meeting with students of the IIT-Kanpur on Sunday night on the IIT-K premises. On Tuesday, over 100 students from IIT-K will proceed to Motijheel to take part in a rally and they have also invited representatives from various other professional institutes in the city. The IIT students will address the rally before handing over a memorandum to the administration. Though the medicos will take part in the rally, they have decided to refrain from addressing the meeting due to mounting pressure from the medical college administration to get the strike called off or face the music.
But, so far in the strike the role of professors has come under scrutiny. Sources said the major force behind the success of the strike was the college faculty who provided tacit support to the striking medicos and even abstained from their duty in the OPDs.However, the college administration claimed that on Monday 531 patients were examined at the OPD in LLR Hospital, that remained opened for an hour.

{{/usCountry}}Similarly, 106 and 110 patients were also checked at the cardiology and maternity departments respectively.On Monday, the college administration convened an emergency meeting with the department heads. Some department heads who attended the meeting told the Hindustan Times that pressure was on from the State government to suppress the protesting medicos.
A senior faculty said, “ In all likelihood if the medicos forcibly try to halt OPD services then stern action would be taken against senior and junior residents, who have so far been playing their card from behind the curtain, to make the strike a success.”
