A court in New Delhi has asked the Delhi government to probe the 'casual' approach in issuing disability certificates by city hospitals.
A Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal directed Delhi Principal Health Secretary to probe the current procedures followed by hospitals while issuing disability certificates and file a report with it shortly.
Designated Judge Gurdeep Singh passed the order while hearing a complaint that a city hospital in New Delhi issued a disability certificate to 40-year-old road accident victim by mentioning his age as 17.
"Issuance of disability certificate is a very important and responsible job. It creates valuable right in the person to get benefit under the law. Casual approach has to be deprecated," he said.
The certificate is issued under the Disabilites Act, 1995, especially in road accident cases, to help the court realise the extent of injuries caused to a victim in order to finally compute the amount of compensation due to him.
The court's order came on an application for compensation filed against Oriental Insurance Company by Naresh Yadav in January 18, 1996.
Yadav, a tourist bus driver, was severely injured when an over-speeding truck rammed his vehicle in 1995.
