Are you planning to apply to Delhi University (DU) but are not keen on joining just another conventional course? Then wait a moment and give vocational programmes a thought. Vocational programmes prepare you for a career right after college. There are a host of programmes to choose from and there have been a few recent introductions by DU as well. HT Horizons spoke to Nina Rao, Faculty, College of Vocational Studies, DU to find out more about these promising options.

What makes a vocational course popular?
Vocational courses give students an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge and, being industry and service oriented, help in getting employment soon after completion of the programme.
Are there any new additions by the University?
The traditional courses are Office Management and Secretarial Practice, Tourism, Book Publishing, Insurance, Retailing and Trade, Stores Management, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Entrepreneurship and Small Business. We have also added a Bachelors in Business Economics and B.Sc. (Hon) Electronics.
Are there other colleges offering these courses?
22 DU colleges have adopted the Office Management and Secretarial Practice course whereas only Sri Venkateshwara and Dyal Singh offer Tourism.
Are students encouraged to do internships along with their course?
Yes, but of late, the industry demands a fee for allowing such internships. We try to send students on summer work experiences through memberships that the college has with professional organisations.
How good is your placement percentage?
Almost 90 per cent of our students get jobs. Since our courses also train students to be self-employed, many —- especially in tourism —- explore the option of entreprenuership.
