PROPER TREATMENT for two to three years can completely cure 80 to 90 per cent cancer afflicted children. Cancer specialist Dr Brijesh Arora said this at a workshop here on Sunday.
The CME programme on ‘Paediatric oncology – an overview’ was organised jointly by the Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Indian Academy of Paediatricians and Gandhi Medical College, Radiotherapy Department at Hotel Jehan Numa. The workshop discussed causes, symptoms and treatment of cancer among children.
Noted oncologist from Tata Memorial Hospital Dr PA Kurkure said children were generally afflicted with blood or brain cancer. In detection of such cancerous growth, pathology and radiology departments could play an important role because through test any deficiency in the blood could be detected in time, he added.
Dr Brijesh Arora shed light on types of blood cancers and their treatment. Praising facilities in the Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital, he said in some respects it was better equipped than Tata Memorial.
Dr Sajid Qureshi and Dr S Lakhkar also dwelt at length on surgery and radiotherapy in cancer treatment. Cancer hospital chairman Dr Madan Mohan Joshi inaugurated the workshop by lighting the ceremonial lamp.
