The angry protesters targeted police and CRPF troopers in Maisuma locality, adjacent to city centre Lal Chowk.

The police fired several rounds of teargas shells to disperse the protesters who kept on regrouping from the bylanes of the densely populated area.

Shops in and around Maisuma were closed following the eruption of fresh clashes.

On Tuesday, two paramilitary troopers and many civilians were injured in clashes in Srinagar. The protesters are demanding the removal of the CRPF unit and also action against those allegedly responsible for beating up shopkeepers and pedestrians in the area.

“The administration has already set up an enquiry into Tuesday's incident in the area and deputy inspector general of police central Kashmir has been asked to conduct the investigation,” a senior police officer said in Srinagar.

Meanwhile, the police on Thursday arrested Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, the younger brother of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation front (JKLF) founder, Muhammad Maqbool Bhat, from Trehgam village in north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

Zahoor, according to sources, had married in Muzaffarabad and had come to his ancestral home along with his wife and children.
