Protests continue in J&K

For the third consecutive day on Wednesday, Jammu and Kashmir continued to rock under protests. But protests in both places were by and large peaceful barring few incidents of violence.

Police had to open fire at six places across the Valley to quell the violent mobs causing injuries to two persons. Two more persons — Faisal Ahmad Dar and Hafiz Ahmad Baba — injured in police firing on Tuesday died in hospital, taking the overall toll to 22 since Monday.

Authorities relaxed curfew restrictions in Srinagar between 8am and 11am, which was later extended to 5pm. Hundreds of residents took to protest demonstrations at several places in the city, shouting pro-freedom slogans.

A mob went on rampage at Bemina on the outskirts of Srinagar and torched the office complex of Srinagar Development Authority. Police opened fire to disperse the mob injuring one. Police and protestors clashed at several places in interior Srinagar where stone pelting was retaliated by teargas and overhead firing. At least 10 civilians and four policemen were injured.

In Jammu, violent incidents dropped with security forces keeping a strict vigil at all sensitive locations of the region. Curfew was not relaxed in Kishtwar district where efforts are on to hold an all-party meeting with religious leaders from both communities to maintain communal harmony.
