“OVER 39 million people around the world are affected by AIDS. In India, every year thousands of people are contracting the dreaded HIV infection. The HIV patients have to undergo a lot of social trauma,” said Dr AK Bansal, president, Allahabad Medical Association (AMA).
Addressing the AIDS awareness meeting at the AMA on Friday, Dr Bansal said that this year’s World AIDS Day slogan was ‘Stop AIDS and keep the promise’.
“The young population between 18-40 years is the most vulnerable to the disease. The AMA regularly organises AIDS awareness programmes for the general public,” he added.
Speaking on the occasion, other members of the AMA emphasised on creating more awareness about HIV/AIDS. They said that the NGOs, working for AIDS awareness programmes in the district, should be supported. The medical and health services also need to be reviewed to provide proper treatment to HIV positive patients, the members felt.
Field Ambulance’s seminar on AIDS: The 304 Field Ambulance organised a seminar on the occasion of World AIDS Day-2006 under the aegis of Red Eagle Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA) at the conference hall of the unit here on Friday. The aim of the seminar was to unite the armed forces personnel and their family members in the fight against AIDS by ensuring accountability.
President Red Eagle, AWWA Dimple Buttar inaugurated the seminar. The president Red Eagle AWWA while appreciating the efforts put in to combat the grave malady emphasised that there was no room for complacency and reiterated the importance of safe sex practices. Assistant Director of Medical Services, Red Eagle Division Col G Sivashankar highlighted this year’s theme ‘ accountability’ and ‘Know AIDS for the AIDs’ and concluded with a message ‘Stop AIDS: keep the promise’. Over 300 troops and families including schoolchidren participated in the event.
