Shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicles off the road in the district following the shutdown
call jointly given by local auqaf committee and youth forum, officials said.

People took to the streets and beat drums alleging the district was discriminated against by the government in all
respects, especially development.

They also alleged that some offices have been shifted from the district.

However, officials of the district denied the allegations saying none of the offices have been shifted.

"No office has been shifted from the district town. In fact, we are trying to get back the offices in Pulwama which
were set up in other parts the district before reorganisation of district. Since, Shopian has been made a district out of
Pulwama, we are trying to get back the offices," Assistant Revenue Commissioner Pulwama Mohammad Haroon told PTI.

The shutdown was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported, police said and described the situation in the town
as "normal".
