Noting that transnational terrorism poses greater threat to the world than wars, India has said the international community should work "purposefully" in cooperation to combat the menace.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said enhancing security cooperation is critical to India's larger efforts aimed at building lasting economic ties with other countries.

"An environment of security, predictability and peace is essential for people to prosper, business to flourish and development to take place," he said addressing the valedictory function of the 41st Professional Course for Foreign Diplomats in New Delhi on Friday evening.

"Today, the principal threats to peace and stability in the world are less from wars between nations and more from transnational terrorism," he emphasised.

"That is why, as we jointly work towards an intensification of our economic and other ties, we should not lose sight of the overarching importance of working purposefully and in cooperation to combat the menace of terrorism." The minister said India has consciously embarked on a set of policies to promote economic ties and scientific and technical cooperation among developing countries with an aim of imparting new direction and momentum to its ties with developing countries.
