Put the genie back into the bottle
Kudos to BJP MP Prabha Jha for returning the box of liquor bottles sent to him by United Breweries Chairman Vijay Mallya as a gift (MP returns liquor bottle to Mallya, October 13). Mallya’s display of sycophancy for the rich and the influential by gifting them alcohol is vulgar. Other politicians who accepted Mallya’s gift should learn lessons from Jha and shun receiving presents.

Don’t meddle in our affairs
The Indian government should seriously take note of the report, War of words: China revives border row (October 14). It is ridiculous that even the visit of our Prime Minister to one of our own states, Arunachal Pradesh, is being objected by the Chinese. This should be seen as an opportunity to prepare our defence forces for any eventuality. Pakistan is slowly imploding and, therefore, doesn’t pose as serious a threat as China.

There is nothing wrong with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s reference to Arunachal Pradesh as India’s ‘land of the rising sun’. China is unnecessarily overreacting to Singh’s visit to an Indian state. It is a matter of concern that since 1948, both China and Pakistan have been creating problems for India. Our governments have failed to give a befitting reply to either of them. India’s silence highlights its convoluted foreign policy.
