A QUACK died in police custody at Unaj police station Bhadohi district. SP N Jha took serious note of the matter and suspended the station officer and a constable.
Policemen said the accused hanged himself from the ventilator of a toilet with his trousers. But sources said police allegedly used third- degree methods on the accused.
The SP described the cause of death as hanging as per the post-mortem report. No injury was found on the body. The district magistrate has constituted a magisterial inquiry.
An FIR has been lodged against six persons including three unidentified persons.
The named accused included, a DSP, station officer of Unaj police station and a santari cum constable.
Three police personnel are not mentioned in the FIR. The SO and a constable had already been suspended by the SP on Sunday.
Meanwhile, locals staged a demonstration, demanding arrest of policemen responsible for the death of the accused Gulab.
They also sought compensation for dependants of deceased. The demonstration ended after Gyanpur-Bhadhoi MLA Vijaya Mishra assured the agitators that he would speak to the chief minister for compensation.
Police had taken Gulab into custody following a complaint that he had attempted to murder Dr Subhash Bind in Bhadohi on Saturday night.
