Quake rattles Indonesia, no casualties reported

A 5.4-magnitude earthquake jolted several eastern Indonesian islands on Friday but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, meteorologists said.

The undersea tremor hit at 4:20 am (0050 hours IST) and was centered at a depth of seven kilometres in the Maluku Sea, the US Geographical Survey said.

It was centered 141 kilometres west-northwest of the town of Ambon in the Maluku islands, the USGS report said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Yogyakarta and its surrounds on the Indonesian island of Java on May 27 and killed 5,855 people.
