Members of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities are at present in Lucknow and have started interacting with government bodies, non-government organisations (NGOs), social scientists, intellectuals, academicians and eminent public persons to elicit their views on the terms of reference of the commission, before it comes out with the final report.

The commission has to submit report to the government of India in October this year.

Virtually everyone attending the meeting was unanimous that reservations were needed and suggested that the commission’s report must incorporate it as its main recommendation.

More than 50 persons, including women, from Lucknow and other parts of UP attended the meeting. Prominent among those were Zafaryab Jilani, Maulana Khalid Rashid, Rajender Singh Bagga, Mark Farandees, Zarina Usmani, Nigar Khan, Darapuri etc.

The terms of reference of the commission are: to suggest criteria for identification of socially and economically backward sections among religious and linguistic minorities, to recommend measures for welfare of socially and economically backward sections among these minorities including reservations in education and government employment.

The commission’s interaction will continue on Friday too.
