REPRESENTATIVES OF religious and linguistic minorities’ groups have demanded reservation for their community in government educational institutions and jobs.
Speaking before the National Commission for Religious And Linguistic Minorities at Yojna Bhawan on Thursday, some of the members suggested that the SC ceiling on reservation of 50 per cent should be done away with.
Members of the National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities are at present in Lucknow and have started interacting with government bodies, non-government organisations (NGOs), social scientists, intellectuals, academicians and eminent public persons to elicit their views on the terms of reference of the commission, before it comes out with the final report.
The commission has to submit report to the government of India in October this year.
Virtually everyone attending the meeting was unanimous that reservations were needed and suggested that the commission’s report must incorporate it as its main recommendation.
More than 50 persons, including women, from Lucknow and other parts of UP attended the meeting. Prominent among those were Zafaryab Jilani, Maulana Khalid Rashid, Rajender Singh Bagga, Mark Farandees, Zarina Usmani, Nigar Khan, Darapuri etc.
Dr Mohinder Singh, the member of the commission and Asha Das, member secretary of the commission heard the suggestions. Justice Rangnath Misra, former Chief Justice of India, heads the commission that was constituted to determine the criterion for identification of socially and economically backward sections among religious and linguistic minorities for their welfare.
