ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY (AU) students remained united against reduction in seats but fell apart on the issue of reservation in the varsity. Several student associations staged protest in support of reservation while others opposed the proposal through demonstration and meetings.

The Arakshan Virodhi Chatra Sangharsh Morcha (AVCSM) burnt an effigy of the Allahabad University (AU) vice-chancellor Prof RG Harshe for reducing the seats and sought lowering of the university fee. A meeting in this regard was organised that was presided over by AVCSM president Abhishek Shukla.
Speaking at the meeting, Shukla praised AU Chancellor Dr Verghese Kurien’s statement against reservation in higher education. Shukla accused the VC of overlooking the needs of the students and several other burning issues.
AVCSM spokesman Pradeep Narayan Dwivedi advocated restoring evening classes and said that students would stage a protest if the authorities failed to meet their demands. Those present on the occasion were Vijay Dwivedi, Samar Bahadur Singh, Om Prakash Dwivedi, Sunil Dwivedi, Shivendra Mishra and others.

{{/usCountry}}AU student union president Ajit Kumar presided over the meeting while Bahujan Chatra Sabha general secretary Surendra Chaudhary conducted the meeting.
Addressing the meet, Yadav said that Dr Kurien had no right to speak against the constitutional rights of the backward students and should abstain from making such statements.
He said if the Central government was sincere, it should immediately implement reservation.
Those present in the meeting included Kishor Patel, Pawan Kumar, Sonu Yadav and Santosh Yadav among others.
In a separate move, students lead by the AU student union vice-president Brijendra Mishra, submitted a memorandum to vice-chancellor Prof RG Harshe against reduction in seats.
Mishra said, “We can’t accept Central status at the cost of seats and without reduction in the varsity fee.”
The students threatened to go on relay fast at the VC’s office if their demands were not considered by the authorities. Those present on the occasion included Om Prakash Dwivedi, Sunil Dwivedi and Sunil Yadav.
