The 16-year-old actor is the youngest person, except the offspring of the royal family, to have his portrait exhibited in the gallery on Trafalgar Square.

Radcliffe was 14, and had just embarked on the fourth Potter film when he posed for the drawing by Stuart Pearson Wright, whose previous studies include one of JK Rowling, the creator of the Potter books.

The picture shows the actor in jeans and T-shirt, looking thoughtful while sitting in an armchair in the artist's studio.

Radcliffe, who is at present shooting Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, said he was delighted to join the National Portrait Gallery.

"It is very weird. It is fantastic. It is a very, very strange feeling. In terms of painting, drawing and sketching, I am utterly talentless", he remarked.
