Over the last weeks, he has been interacting with groups of party activists from different assembly segments about the profile and caste equations of the constituency. On Wednesday, it was the turn of Gautam Buddha Nagar.

The exercise, which began a month back, has got a boost with the party’s performance in the recent civic elections, igniting hopes among the cadres of a possible Congress revival in the state where it hopes to become a decisive player in the post-poll scenario.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) are the two main contenders for the throne, with the Congress hoping to slug it out with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the third spot.

There is no official word yet whether Rahul would take a formal party position at the All India Congress Committee or lead the party’s battle in the crucial state that sends 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
