Rahul Mahajan had recently told a senior BJP leader that he wanted to make a Bollywood film on the July 7, 2005 London bombings. He mentioned this when he and the late Pramod Mahajan's secretary Bibek Maitra called upon this leader, seeking "guidance" in the wake of the his father's death.

The senior BJP leader — a colleague of Pramod Mahajan — had apparently told him, he should first settle down in a career of his liking before venturing out into politics.

It was then that Rahul, who had earlier tried out his hand at TV and later dabbled in a production house, said he wanted to make a film on the series of co-ordinated suicide bombings that struck the London’s transit system during rush hour.

Rahul felt the film would click since it was the greatest catastrophe to occur in the UK since the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight103, which killed 270 persons. Fifty-six people were killed in the attacks.

Though the senior BJP leader was not much impressed by Rahul's idea, he felt Rahul wanted to do something meaningful to overcome the "fault lines" in his character.

Maitra on his part had told the senior BJP leader that he wanted to be a lawyer in Delhi while hoping for a role in the party. He found Mumbai unbearable because Pramod Mahajan was no more.

Meanwhile, many BJP leaders, though taken aback by former prime minister AB Vajpayee's remark in defence of Rahul, have decided that he had spoken "from his heart" as an elder of the extended BJP family.
