According to reports, teams of entertainment tax officials carried out search operations against eight cable TV operators, who figured on the department’s list of tax defaulters. The move took the operators’ by surprise, as they were holding a thanksgiving party for SP leader Kanchchal for getting official nod for a compounding scheme for them.

According to deputy entertainment tax commissioner UC Saxena, the crackdown against the 27 remaining defaulters would continue and an FIR against them would be lodged if they failed to clear their tax dues within the next two days.

Together, these 35 operators owe Rs 22 lakh by way of entertainment tax, he added.

Asked about the recent meeting of operators with the Entertainment Tax Commissioner on the issue, Saxena said, “They (cable operators) were told to deposit 70 per cent of the tax due on them immediately, if they wanted to avail the benefit of a compounding scheme. It was yet to receive government’s nod.”
