Protestors, supporting Anna Hazare’s agitation against corruption and rallying against his arrest by the police in New Delhi, resorted to road and rail blockades at Sonepat on Tuesday.
Police security at the railway station, bus stand and other public places has been beefed up and patrolling intensified as a precautionary measure by the district administration.
Acording to reports, people from different sections of society, including students and activists of various social and political organisations, staged a dharna at Subhash Chowk and Gandhi chowk in Sonepat town.
Students of the Deenbandhu Chhotu Ram University of Science and Technology (DCRUST) at Murthal blocked the Sonepat-Murthal road for about half an hour to protest against Anna's arrest, and in support of his agitation for a strong and effective lokpal.
A Delhi bound passenger train was also stopped for a few minutes at Sonepat by protesters. The Amritsar bound Shan-e-Punjab express train was also forced to make an unscheduled halt at Sonepat railway station for a few minutes.
Four protestors were taken into custody by the police.
Residents in several localities of the town resorted to "black out" by switching off lights for an hour late in the evening on Monday. Activists were seen moving from house to house urging the people to switch off their lights in protest against the UPA government’s stand on the jan lokpal bill.
The members of Gohana Bar Association also observed work suspension in support of Anna Hazare’a demand for a strong lokpal and to protest against his arrest, terming it "undemocratic and violation of fundamental rights".
