Rain played spoilsport as the match between ONGC and Assam was abandoned after heavy shower forced the players to return to the pavilion on the second day of the 15th All India J.P. Atray Memorial Cricket Tournament for Pearls Trophy at the Sector 16 Stadium, Chandigarh, on Thursday.
The 50 over match was reduced to 43 overs. Both the teams shared two points each.
ONGC opted to bat first and were off to a flying start. Both the openers Radhey Shyan and Sandeep Sharma took no time in settling down and made Assam bowling attack look pedestrian. They piled up 91 runs for the opening wicket before Sandeep Sharma was trapped in front of wicket by right arm medium pacer Vikrant Yadav on individual score of 58. His knock was studded with 10 hits to the boundary and one towering six.
Radhey Shyam was then joined by former India wicketkeeper Ajay Ratra and the duo added 42 runs for the first wicket. Left arm spinner Prakash Bhagat broke the partnership which started to look threatening by removing Ratra on 27 with scoreboard reading 134. Bhagat against struck by removing skipper Gagan Khoda, who scored 13 runs in his brief stay at the wicket.
Veteran Rizwan Shamshad was the next to go at the total of 192. He was caught off the bowling of spinner Tejinder Singh for 21 runs. The sixth wicket fell in form of opener Radhey Shyam, who made 66 from 102 balls.
