A girl was killed in a landslide as heavy rains lashed the city for the second consecutive day on Friday, inundating low lying areas and partially disrupting rail and road traffic.
Ten-year-old Rekha Kanojia was killed and her younger brother Vishnu injured in a landslide at Milindnagar in suburban Ghatkopar.
The two were rushed to Rajawadi hospital, where Rekha was declared dead before admission.
Heavy rains with strong gusty winds since last night flooded low-lying areas and disrupted rail and road traffic during the morning peak hours.
Movement of rail traffic on central, western and harbour lines were restricted for an hour between six am and seven am due to water-logging on the tracks. Until afternoon the trains were running 30 to 45 minutes behind schedule. However, the rains subsided later providing respite to the commuters.
About 100 suburban train services on the central railway were cancelled due to flooding of tracks in Kurla, Sion and Dadar. About 70 services on the harbour route were suspended because of water-logging at Wadala and signal failure at Chembur. Services between Bandra and Andheri were also disrupted, railway sources said.
Services of long distance trains were also hit. 2962 Avantika express was detained between Mahim and Kings Circle while 1027 Dadar-gorakhpur express and 3448 Dadar-bhagalpur express were detained at Dadar.
