Incessant rains over the last three days have claimed six lives in Chhattisgarh, government sources said today.
Rains that began on Saturday have hit normal life with many houses submerged and traffic thrown out of gear.
State's major rivers like Mahanadi, Shivnath, Indravati have swollen and all lines of communication with inner parts of the state have got cut off.
Government sources said six persons have lost their lives owing to rains in different parts of the state. While a student drowned in a 'nallah' at Champaranya, one person died after a wall collapsed at Dornapal in Dantewada district. A woman and a youth drowned in a river in Surguja district and a couple lost their lives following lightning in Janjgir district.
In Raipur itself, many houses have submerged and civic officials said they were making use of motors to pump out the water.
A low pressure belt formed in the Bay of Bengal led to heavy rains in the state. However, with the low pressure now receding, relief from rains is likely, they said.
The rainfall in the state was 32 per cent less than normal till last week. However, heavy rains over the last three days have wiped out the shortfall, they added.
