The authorities have sounded an alert in Yamuna Nagar, Panipat, Karnal and Sonepat districts of Haryana as flow of the river near the Hathnikund Barrage at Tajewala headworks was around 4.30 lakh cusecs of water late last night, Haryana's Irrigation Engineer-in-Chief RK Dewan said in Chandigarh.

"However, this morning 2.87 lakh cusecs of water is released from the Tajewala headworks near Yamuna Nagar," he said, adding that the situation in the four districts of the state from where Yamuna passes is alarming due to incessant rains at the catchment areas.

Several villages along the banks of Yamuna river in the four districts of Haryana are put on alert following increased flow in the river, officials said in Chandigarh.

Thousands of acres of land under cultivation lying between the river bed and the bandh in the four districts of the state has been inundated due to heavy rainfall and increased flow in Yamuna, officials said.
