The NCA took up the issue after Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh counselled review by the Authority of the decision to raise the height of the dam.

The CCPA decision came when Patkar refused to give up her hunger strike until a decision is taken by the Centre to stop work on the mega project. On the other hand several Gujarat MPs met Soz expressing themeselves strongly against any such move.

The Government had decided to call a meeting of NCA in the wake of protests by NBA led by Medha Patkar demanding an immediate halt on the work to increase the height of the SSP which they claim would displace 35,000 families.
