Police recovered the bodies from Hatia locality of the city late on Friday evening. Their throats had been slit.

The victims, who had left their homes to fish in a river, did not return till evening, sparking a search by the worried families.

Police said the killings were an outcome of a gang war between two groups of Hindus and Muslims over extortion.

A few days ago, a Muslim group allegedly killed a member of a gang led by Sharvan Chauhan. The Friday killings are seen as retaliation.

The news of the recovery of the bodies created tension in some parts of the city.

The government has suspended the officer in-charge of the Jagannathpur police station and transferred Senior Superintendent of Police RK Mallik and Deputy Superintendent of Police Shambhu Thakur.

Chief Minister Madhu Koda and Muslim groups have urged people to maintain peace.
