Ranjit Kumar appointed new solicitor general

The law ministry has issued a notification appointing Kumar, who is considered to be an expert on constitutional law, as the next solicitor general of India. Kumar had represented the Gujarat government in a number of cases.

The law ministry has issued a notification appointing Kumar, who is considered to be an expert on constitutional law, as the next solicitor general of India. Kumar had represented the Gujarat government in a number of cases.

The ministry also issued notifications appointing senior advocates Maninder Singh, Tushar Mehta, L Nageshwar Rao, PS Patwalia, Neeraj Kishen Kaul and PS Narasimha as additional solicitors general.

With this, the Narendra Modi government has made its first appointment of law officers who would be representing it in courts.

Suspense, however, continues over the appointment of the attorney general, the top-most law officer of the government. Senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi’s name has been doing the rounds in legal circles. He is said to have given his consent for the post.

Kumar had been a counsel for the Gujarat government and an amicus curiae in several cases in the Supreme Court. Among the cases he represented was the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.
