Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Tuesday announced a slew of measures to counter the increasing incidence of rape in the state. It, however, came too late for a 17-year-old in Mukhari village of Baghpat district. The daughter of a CRPF jawan was raped allegedly by her friend’s brothers on Monday.

Shamed at the prospect of facing the village panchayat, the girl hanged herself on Tuesday morning.

The girl had gone to meet her friend in the same village. Her friend was not there, but the friend’s two brothers, Sanjay (24) and Rinku (20), were at home. Taking advantage of the situation, they invited the victim inside the house and allegedly raped her.

The girl used to accompany the sister of the accused to a nearby sewing/stitching training centre and had reached her home for the same. Villagers blamed police for not paying heed to the complaints of the victim’s family, which perhaps prompted her to commit suicide.

Police officials, however, have denied the charges, saying none from the victim’s family approached them on Monday and that neighbours informed them about her death only on Tuesday.

Circle officer of Khekra area, Anil Sirohi, however, claimed, “Initial investigations have revealed the girl had gone to meet one of the brothers on her own, but was spotted by a neighbour, who raised an alarm.

The girl’s father, Rohtas, is likely to arrive on Wednesday.

Hunt on to track missing cops

The police in Lakhimpur-Kheri district have launched a hunt to nab the 11 policemen who have been absconding since they were suspended on June 13 after being accused of raping and murdering a teenaged girl.

The policemen were suspended three days after the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree inside the police station in Nighasan town, raising a public outcry.

The UP government has asked the CB-CID to probe the case. “Without recording the statements of the policemen it is not possible to complete the probe,” said an officer.
