If you are traveling on a train anywhere in India, the idli that you eat onboard in Kanyakumari will taste perfectly as it tastes in Punjab. The Indian Railways have got the reputed Banglore-based Institute of Hotel Management to compile a recipe book for standardised food on trains across the country.
“There are thousands of caterers across the country and it does sound difficult, but we are making an attempt towards standardising food at base kitchen and pantries on Indian Railways,” said Rakesh Tandon, the managing director of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
“Passengers should get involved and stand up and complain if they have objections about the food on the train. I have directed officials to put up all details of the contractor, the food content and where they can complain about food in trains so that commuters can make a difference,” he said.
“Many passengers also complain that the complaint book is not made available in trains. The name complaint book sends negative vibes, so we will rename it as suggestion book,” added Tandon.
“There’s also a toll-free number which you can call — even from you cellphone — and inform us about the problem on 1800111139.”
