The 28-year-old also obliterated his Commonwealth Games record by nearly six minutes in a time of 1 hour 19 minutes 55 seconds as he led a cleansweep of the medals just as the women had done earlier in the day.

Luke Adams took silver while Jarred Tallent won the bronze in the elite field of 10 athletes for whom India's Parayll Jalan performed admirably in finishing fifth.

For Deakes, who led from the start and was never really challenged, this was his third successive Commonwealth title as he had already won the 20km and 50km at the 2002 edition.

The 2004 Olympic bronze medallist in the 20km walk has battled against the odds as he has been suffering from a hamstring injury since the middle of 2005 and is due to undergo an operation on the offending muscle in May this year.
