Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday morning began an operation to rescue 10 civilians believed to be trapped in an avalanche in the north Kashmir Sonamarg hill station.

Aamir Ali, officer on special duty at the provincial headquarters, told IANS, "The divisional administration has organized a rescue operation for 10 civilians still trapped in the avalanche-bound Sonamarg hill station.

"It is a joint rescue operation by the Indian air force, the army and the district administration in Ganderbal district."
Seven of the 10 people are employees of the Sonamarg development authority while three are local residents.
Last week, nine people were rescued in Sonamarg in a similar joint rescue operation.
