Former Prime Minister and JD(S) President HD Deve Gowda on Sunday said regional parties would play a major role in the formation of the next government at the Centre in the event of re-grouping of parties after the final phase of the ongoing general elections.

"In the event of a hung parliament as predicted by the media, definitely there will be re-grouping of political parties and the regional parties will play the major role in the government formation," he told PTI here on Sunday.
As the speculations by the media had not predicted a majority by NDA after the second phase of polling, both BJP and its allies and the Congress and its allies have made serious efforts to gain maximum political mileage during the third and fourth phase of polling.
"But a clear picture will emerge only after the election," he said.
Asked about the roles of BSP and Samajwadi Party in the formation of the next government, the former prime minister said "They have their own political equation and no inference can be drawn at this juncture. They might change their stands depending on the circumstances...It is too early to predict a concrete picture till the results of the poll come in."
Deve Gowda, who claimed to be the first to have initiated the political dialogue to resolve the vexed Naga problem after meeting NSCN(I-M) leaders in Geneva in 1997, was here to campaign in support of the JD(S) candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland which goes to the hustings on May 5. Deve Gowda said the initial euphoria created by BJP in its 'India Shining' campaign did not reflect the ground reality in rural India and NDA did not find the appreciation of the people in areas of agriculture, basic amenities and condition of working class.

But JD(S) will definitely play a key role in the formation of the government in Karnataka where simultaneous polls to the state assembly was held, he asserted.
JD(S) is contesting in 34 parliamentary seats in the country with the maximum in Karnataka. In Kerala it was supporting CPI(M).
