Though the Haryana government had issued a notification in 2007, making it mandatory for residents to get their pets registered with the municipal body, not even a single owner, except those who sell pets, has come forward so far.

While the civic body blames the lack of adequate publicity for the cold response, officials now plan to strictly enforce the order.

Residents, too, don’t seem to be aware of such a government notification. Praveen Sharma, a resident of Sector 31, said, “We were aware of such a ruling in Delhi that it is mandatory to get pets registered, but I have never heard of any such law in Gurgaon.”

Savita Manchanda, a resident of Sector 55, said, “There should be more awareness about the registration process. How do you expect a layman to know such things? The MCG can put up billboards or distribute pamphlets regularly, so that all residents can be informed.”

Talking about the number of cases registered till now, he said, “Pet sellers have been approaching the department for registration, but individual cases are not coming forward. We plan to take strict action and even challan residents if they fail to follow the rules.”
